Kellogg is one of the largest users in Australia of yellow milling corn used in food production.A total of about four variants have been selected to produce the materials suited to the production of Corn Flakes. Maize is grown under contract mainly from the Murrumbidgee and Murray Irrigation Areas in southern NSW and can extend through to the Liverpool Plains in northern NSW.This allows for security of production despite variations in climatic conditions. This climatic variation and the different soils, provide a range of growing conditions in which different varieties are selected for best performance in particular areas. For instance, a variety which produced a good yield per hectare of quality maize in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area may not be as suited to the conditions on the Liverpool Plains. Kellogg works closely with its milling partners and with the seed breeders and other experts to continually guide growers in the economic production of quality grain. When harvested, the maize is stored in silos prior to milling. The maize must meet strict standards for grain size, breakage and moisture content before being received for storage.Milling of the maize is handled in a specialised corn mill at Albury in southern NSW, on the NSW/Victorian border. This mill produces grits from the hard vitreous part of the maize. These grits have to meet stringent specifications to ensure the production of uniform sized Corn Flakes with consistent quality and flavour.Only about 40 percent of each grain is suitable for grits. Of the balance, a range of particle sizes is used for corn based snack products as well as in other Kellogg cereals and the finer particle size material and the germ & bran is ground up into high nutrient, high protein animal feeds.
