Grain and grain based foods

4 - 6 or more servings per day

One serving =

  • 2 slices of bread, 1 medium bread roll
  • 1 cup of cooked rice, pasta or noodles
  • 1 1/3 cup breakfast cereal flakes or 1 cup porridge

These foods provide carbohydrate, an important source of energy and some also provide dietary fibre. They can also provide B vitamins such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and folate and minerals such as iron.

Foods include:

  • Bread (all types) and other grain-based foods such as breakfast cereals and cereal bars
  • Pasta and noodles
  • Rice
  • Oats
  • Couscous
