Heart Health
Following a sensible, healthy diet is key to heart health. Follow these diet tips combined with half an hour's physical activity to help maintain a healthy heart.
- Eat at least 5 portions of vegetables and 2 portions of fruit daily.
- Limit fat intake to 20-35 percent of daily energy intake, with no more than 10 percent of daily energy coming from saturated and trans fat.
- Reduce and replace some saturated fats with polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats.
- Include oily fish such as mackerel, herring, pilchards, sardines, trout or salmon in your diet. Omega-3 fatty acids found in oily fish are good for heart health.
- The adequate intake for men and women (51-70 years) is 460-920 mg of sodium per day but you should consume no more than 2300 mg a day.
- If you drink alcohol, limit your intake.
- Finally, keep a healthy weight throughout life and keep physically active.
