Breakfast and weight management

Watching your weight

Research indicates that people who eat breakfast are more likely to be able to maintain a healthy weight. It is not entirely clear why this is so but studies suggest that three facts may contribute to this:

  • A high fibre breakfast helps you feel fuller for longer which may lead to less mid-morning snacking
  • People who eat breakfast generally make better choices during the rest of the day and have lower total fat intakes overall
  • Eating can help increase your metabolism slightly

Some excuses as to why people don’t eat breakfast

“I don’t have time for breakfast”
When every moment counts in the morning, still make time for a quick breakfast of cereal, fruit and milk. Or if you prefer to eat at work, take a cereal bar with you or keep a box of cereal in your work cupboard.

“I’m just not hungry in the morning”
Even after going up to 10 to 12 hours without food overnight, you might be someone who can’t face food in the morning. Start with something small, a piece of fruit or a glass of milk, then later try a slice of toast or a bowl of cereal. In time your body will adjust and so will your appetite.
