Special K® Nutrition Guide

Low in fat, high in protein and taste.  Kellogg's® Special K® Original is a good source of protein, which is essential in a balanced diet that will help keep you feeling and looking great.

So why is protein important to your diet...

It helps to build and repair all our body cells that make up our skin, hair, nails, teeth, muscles and organs.  It helps you feel fuller for longer (satiety) as does carbohydrates.  Special K® Original helps provide you with a nutrient sound start to the day.

Some of the important vitamins and minerals it supplies are:

  • Folate
  • Iron
  • Calcium
  • B1, B2 and Niacin

What's all this fuss about folate?
Since July 1996, folate fortification has been permitted in Australia, so we’ve taken the opportunity to ensure that most of our cereals are now a good source of folate for our consumers. Folate is needed for normal growth and development of cells. Folate is also important for women in their childbearing years.

Recognising the importance of these studies, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) approved a health claim in relation to folate and birth defects. You may have seen information about folate on our packs.

The FSANZ health claim states that: “women who increase their intake of folate one month before and 3 months after conception may reduce the risk of birth defects in their baby.  Women whould consume a minimum of 400µg of folate per day in at least the month before and at least the first 3 months following conception."

A range of foods such as citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables, wholegrain cereals, nuts and breads and cereals that include folate should be eaten to obtain the recommended level of folate.

Oh, and by the way, folate is also good for men. People of both sexes and all ages need it for normal growth and development of cells.

Special K® provides 50% of the adult RDI + 25% for women in their childbearing years RDI for folate.

Be vital with vitamin B!

Special K is also a good source of some of the B Group vitamins, which include thiamin (vitamin B1), riboflavin (B2) and niacin (B3). These vitamins are needed to help release the energy from food.

A 30g serve of Special K® will supply you with 25% of the RDI of each of these essential nutrients.

Are you an iron lady?
Iron is a mineral that makes up a major part of your red blood cells. It is needed for daily activity because it helps transport oxygen to working muscles.  It is important for women to maintain an adequate intake of iron.  A 30g serve of Special K® for breakfast will provide you with 25% of the RDI.

Calcium is critical!

Calcium is an essential part of every woman's day. It is important for teeth and when combined with regular exercise, helps achieve healthy bones.  Yet an astonishing 1 out of 2 women** are not meeting their requirements for calcium.  Kellogg's® Special K® gets you off to a great start. One regular 30g serving provides over 20% of your daily calcium* needs.

* The estimated average requirement of calcium is 840mg per day for women aged 31-50.
