ONE STEP CLOSER TO A MORE SUSTAINABLE PLANET


Our world is facing a significant crisis: more than 900 million people face a future of food insecurity brought on by a growing population, climate vulnerability and severe malnutrition.

 

Earlier this year, we launched our new global responsibility initiative Better Days™, which is committed to helping end hunger and create better days for 3 billion people by the end of 2030.

 

We’re really excited to share another historic milestone in our journey to do the right thing by our planet, conserving natural resources all along the value chain - from responsibly sourcing ingredients and reducing food waste, to providing recyclable, reusable or compostable packaging.

 

Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)

 

We have taken an exciting step forward in our company sustainability commitments to help reduce our impact on the environment, through a long-term partnership with the Beryl Solar Farm, a large-scale renewable energy project based in New South Wales.

 

This partnership will generate the equivalent of 100% of the energy forecast required to power our Botany factory and Pagewood head office. Based on 2018 production data, this would be enough to offset the amount of energy to produce over a whopping 600 million boxes of Australian-made cereal over the partnership agreement.

 

Over this period, approximately 139,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions will be displaced – this is almost the same as planting over 2.3 million trees or taking about 30,000 cars off the road!

 

And we’re not stopping at sustainable energy. Here are some of the other ways we’re making changes to reduce our environmental impact…

 

Recyclable Packaging

 

In 2018, we committed to making sure that 100% of our packaging will be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025, and we’re well on our way to achieving this. Today, around 98% of our packaging is recyclable – either via kerbside for our cereal and snack cartons or through REDcycle for cereal bags and snack wrappers.

 

Reducing Water Use

 

Right now, we’re facing intense pressure globally as water scarcity, urbanisation and population growth continue to increase.

 

Since improving and increasing the digitisation at our factory and installing 40 water meters, we’re proud to say that we’ve reduced our water usage by over 45% in the last two years. We’re continuing to find ways to minimise our water use - not only here at Kellogg’s but also in the communities we work with to source ingredients.

 

Waste Reduction

 

We take a holistic view of waste across our value chain and are currently focusing on three key areas:

 

  • Total waste reduction across our operations

  • Food loss and organic waste in our operations and supply chain

  • Packaging used for our foods

 

By driving waste reduction in these areas of our Botany factory, we’ve been making great progress in the reduction of waste, with now only 4.85% of waste being sent to landfill.

 

We also removed all single-use plastics from our offices and factory, which has resulted in a staggering 600,000 items annually no longer going to landfill!

 

We’re really proud of the work we’re doing. As we move forward with our Better Days™ commitments, we look forward to finding new and innovative ways to reduce our impact on the environment and help protect our planet.
