Keeping it Steady

Many Australians have to control their blood sugar levels to keep them nice and steady. This can sometimes be challenging especially when it comes to eating foods that contain carbohydrates. Carbohydrate foods break down to sugars in the digestive system, which are then absorbed into the blood stream. Slowing down the speed at which it goes into the blood is the key to healthy blood sugar levels.

Consult the Experts

We are very lucky to have a team of dietitians and food scientists at Kellogg’s to help us with creating foods with with a good balance of carbs, protein and healthy fats. . They are also a wealth of knowledge when we are looking for foods to help us stay healthy. Their big tip for having steady blood sugars is to choose the right types of carbohydrate foods and mix those with protein, fibre and healthy fat. This slows down the rate of sugar absorption to keep blood sugars in check. For more information about what you should be eating for good blood sugar control, consult your health professional.

Fibre is Your Friend

Fibre-rich grain foods play a role in blood sugar control as they contain a fibre called “soluble fibre”. This type of fibre forms a gel like substance in the digestive system which helps to trap sugars and slow down their absorption. This can help with maintaining steady blood sugar levels. Grains such as oats and whole wheat contain this type of fibre. Chia seeds and psyllium are also good sources of insoluble fibre.
